Networking used to be all about attending events, shaking hands, and exchanging business cards. While in-person connections are still valuable, the way we network has shifted significantly in the digital age. If you’re anything like me, adjusting to this new reality wasn’t exactly easy. But over the years, I’ve found that virtual networking, when done right, can be just as powerful—if not more so—than traditional methods.

Whether you're attending virtual conferences, engaging on LinkedIn, or participating in online industry forums, there are endless opportunities to connect with people who can help you grow both personally and professionally. Here’s what I’ve learned about building meaningful connections in a digital world.

Be Genuine in Your Approach

When I first started networking online, I made the mistake of sending out generic connection requests and expecting people to engage. I quickly realized that virtual networking requires the same level of authenticity as face-to-face interactions. Instead of just clicking “connect,” take a few extra minutes to personalize your message. Mention something specific about their work, an article they wrote, or a shared interest. This shows that you’re genuinely interested in connecting, not just expanding your contact list.

For example, when I connected with a fellow finance professional on LinkedIn, I mentioned a recent post he’d shared about cost optimization strategies. That small gesture opened the door to a meaningful conversation that eventually led to a collaboration opportunity. Authenticity goes a long way, even in the virtual world.

Leverage Virtual Events and Webinars

One of the most effective ways to network virtually is by attending industry-specific webinars, conferences, and meetups. Over time, I noticed an increase in connection requests and engagement, which led to several mentoring opportunities and partnerships. Virtual networking requires persistence, but the payoff is worth it.
